Some sites are clearly 'terrorist'. Some are pretty clearly not.
Then there are some in the middle: they don't like us (the US, the west, etc.) very much, maybe they sympathize some with the jihadis. A couple I have looked at have some bad poetry in praise of jihad, cry a river of tears over the 'occupation', but don't have those stupid videos, or obvious propaganda or recruiting stuff. Not obvious to me, anyway - the translations are bad enough that it's hard to tell. I would tend to call sites like this non-terrorist, but am pretty new at this. Are there any reasonable criterion? Typical symptoms? Special things to look for? Suggestions or helpful hints? How do you more experienced people draw the line? The merkaz forum is pretty clearly into terror, but some of the links I have followed are in the gray zone... |

This forum has a specific area for "Iraqi resistance and liberation" which includes promoting terrorism. Overall site is Sunni perspective. Some pretty strange conspiracy theories here. Also has areas for sanctifying Saddam Hussein, and more mundane concerns.
Has means by which posters can be emailed through the site, and many posters have links to email and/or websites. Can't view media without registering, which I have not done yet. However, you CAN get user profiles without registering, so right now I'm dredging info about the users and links. Will follow up links and seek further info on users. Some posts are reports of recent jihadi operations, and lists of recent jihadi deaths in the field. I will try to check these for accuracy. The guys posting this sort of thing call themselves by titles such as 'media officer'. Need criterion for determining when a site should be taken down, or when it might be more valuable to leave it up, and penetrate it. whois etc. to follow. |

viewed translated. Overall is a poorly executed site about Islam, daily life, cultural stuff, very boring.
There is a forum, can view without registration. Looked at probably 20 posts in sections about politics, and an 'open' section. There was a post that seemed to be happy a US soldier committed suicide in Iraq, but mostly in both sections they were about religion as it relates to political positions, not about jihad. In fact, some were against jihad. Many were in support of the conservative positions of the Sauds, i.e. women should not be active in politics. I don't think this is a terrorist site. I looked at the most inflammatory post titles, and while they might not love the US, none encouraged active 'resistance'. If anything, it might be a propaganda site for the Saudi govt., but I think it would not be so poorly done. |
